Find Your Inner Balance

Compassionate therapy for individuals and couples inspired by the art of bonsai trees.

Let’s be real – life is not easy sometimes.

Have you been feeling overwhelmed and alone? Do you find yourself struggling in your relationships? Are you tired of feeling tired but aren’t sure how to make the changes that will make life more fulfilling?

If you’re here, I imagine you must be going through a difficult time right now. We all go through ups and downs and sometimes life has a way of throwing curveballs we never saw coming. What often makes things harder is not having the right support as you navigate it all.

At Bonsai Counseling & Psychotherapy, we nurture your mental well-being with gentle counseling inspired by the art of bonsai.

Why Bonsai?

I am often asked why I chose “Bonsai” as the name for my practice.

Not only is the Japanese art of bonsai beautiful, but it also makes a great metaphor for therapy.

The bonsai metaphor is about intentional growth, not limitation.

1- Intentional Growth

We focus on helping you grow in ways that fit your values, life stage, and circumstances rather than chasing “perfection.”

2- Pruning What No Longer Serves You

This means identifying unhelpful thought patterns, habits, and behaviors that may have been helpful in the past but no longer serve you. The goal is not to erase the past, but to reshape how it affects your present.

3- Root Strength Before Rapid Change

A bonsai’s success depends on a strong root system as this is how it obtains nourishment. Similarly, we work on strengthening your own “roots” by focusing on emotional regulation, self-awareness, safety, and trust. Strong “roots” make real change sustainable.

4- Environment Matters

Just like a bonsai can’t thrive in the wrong soil, we also consider how external factors contribute to your overall well-being. This means looking at relationships, work or school stress, and cultural and systemic influences among other things.

5- Small, Consistent Practice

Not every session will lead to a major breakthrough – and that’s okay. Progress comes from regular reflection and tiny shifts in your mindset and behaviors.

Hello, I’m Damian!

I am the sole founder and therapist at Bonsai Counseling & Psychotherapy. I consider myself to be versatile and dynamic as I am able to tailor my approach to your needs. I ask questions to encourage deep thinking and act as a guide and offer different perspectives. I teach you strategies to overcome your challenges and also hold you accountable in a compassionate way. I bring not only professional experience but also relate through lived experience. Whatever the situation, I’m confident that we’ll find the way to work through it.

I appreciate working with individuals and couples alike. At the end of the day, we are all humans looking for connection, support, and understanding. I have worked with clients from all walks of life and with some of the most marginalized populations, so judgment is not welcome in our space.

Our Services

Individual Therapy

There are endless possibilities when it comes to individual therapy. It is a space for processing thoughts, feelings, and experiences; understanding our roots; identifying behavioral patterns that hinder our growth; practicing how to shift our focus to our strengths; and learning the tools we need to overcome our challenges. Whatever your goal, we meet you where you are and take things one session at a time.

Couple’s Therapy

In couple’s therapy, we strive to better understand the dynamics that perpetuate your conflict so you can break unhelpful patterns and create a strong foundation on which to rebuild your relationship. This entails increasing your insight and learning to take accountability and responsibility for the role you play in the relationship. We focus on building empathy for your partner and learning to recognize destructive patterns and individual behaviors that are preventing you from having the loving relationship you want. We also identify strategies for fostering emotional connection and building more positivity in the relationship.

We teach effective communication skills and use tools from the Gottman Method, attachment theory, emotionally focused therapy (EFT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

Clinical Supervision

Whether you just graduated, are halfway through, or at the end of collecting hours, having the right support as you progress toward licensure can help you feel better prepared for becoming an independent practitioner.

If you’re just starting out, the work can feel intimidating and overwhelming as no two situations are the same and there are so many things to learn that may not have been covered throughout your studies. As you’re finishing up your hours, you might be getting ready to take your clinical exam and are thinking about what comes next.

Wherever you are on your journey, we are excited to support you in getting to the next phase of your career and making your goals a reality.
